Welcome, let me show you around
Hello! Welcome to the first post of my blog for documenting my adventures running a cantina for birds and starting a garden for humans.
Introduction
How it began
Last month after moving back to my parents' house and finding myself with the opportunity to pursue hobbies, I got a bird feeder (the "Cantina") and a bag of seed, gathered a bunch of old pots lying around, went to the nursery, and my adventures began!
Allow me to show you around.
The Settings
The Cantina
This is the Cantina. Here we offer high-quality wild bird seed and water.
The Cantina features a perch and roof for the perfect balance of indoor/outdoor dining, a deep dish for buffet-style eating, and cups for included refreshments.

The Courtyard
This is the Courtyard. Place of gardening and hangout of birds.
Here is where I'm practicing becoming a pro garden gnome.
The Characters (so far)
The birds
This is BJHi BJ!
BJ is a California scrub jay, or blue jay, hence his name. He was the Cantina's first patron and is now our number one regular. He visits every day for breakfast, brunch, lunch, tea time, snack time, and dinner.
This is Twitch.
Hi Twitch!
Twitch is a Dark-eyed junco, part of the New World Sparrow family. He is quite timid and twitchy and so far only eats from the seed that BJ tosses. I saw him once land at the Cantina but he flew away quickly when he saw me.
He thinks watering the garden is his job.
The plants
And then there are the plants of the Courtyard. So far I have planted:
- Lettuce
- Cilantro
- Parsely
- Dwarf Lemon Tree
- Kale
- Violas
- Lavendar
- Sage
- Oregano
- Dill
In that order, I think.
I'll write more in the next post about what I've planted and the progress of it all so far.
This is the beginning
I'll be sharing what I do, see, and learn in all that relates to birdwatching and gardening.
